A popular 7-day sailing itinerary in Croatia from Dubrovnik starts and ends in Dubrovnik and goes Dubrovnik → Mljet (Okuklje) → Mljet (Polače) → Lastovo (Zaklopatica) → Korčula → Mljet (Sobra) → Šipan (Šipanska Luka) → Dubrovnik: 7 legs and about 120 nautical miles in straight lines between the stops (our calculation; you will sail further). By our rules the best month for it is September, when the mean wind at Dubrovnik is 7 knots (our calculation from NASA POWER data); boats pay a Mljet National Park ticket of €100 a day for an 11–17.99 m vessel from June to September (€50 the rest of the year, bought at the park).

Checked 29 Oct 2026. Adapted from The Globe Sailor's sample itinerary; not yet reviewed by a sailor. Distances are straight lines between the stops (how we calculate); fees are labelled official, secondary or not verified (labels). Your charter base will brief you on the route, depths and conditions.

Windiest month: January (10 kn); calmest: June (6 kn) at Dubrovnik (our reading of NASA POWER means). Mean wind is not gusts or sea state. The grid cell at Dubrovnik has an elevation of 144 m and includes land, so temperatures are indicative only. The reference point for this route (Dubrovnik, 42.650, 18.090) was pulled on 29 Oct 2026 with the same method as the destination pages. Seasonal hazards by month (storms, strong-wind days, rain): weather risk in Croatia. Air temp = NASA POWER monthly mean 2 m air temperature (T2M); wind = monthly mean 10 m wind speed (WS10M), converted from m/s to knots (kn) with 1 m/s = 3600/1852 kn. For each calendar month we average the 2016–2025 values (10 full years). POWER's meteorological grid is ½° latitude by ⅝° longitude (roughly 55 × 50 km at these latitudes), so one cell cannot show local sea breezes or coast-to-hill temperature differences. They are our calculation of average conditions, not a forecast, not gusts, and not sea conditions. Mean wind is lower than the peak winds you will feel on the water. Weather data obtained from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center's Prediction Of Worldwide Energy Resources (POWER) Project, funded through the NASA Earth Science Division (pulled 2026-10-28) (NASA POWER, checked 28 Oct 2026). We changed the data: we averaged the monthly values for 2016–2025 and converted wind from m/s to knots (our calculation).

Do I need a licence or a skipper?

Yes: to skipper a bareboat in Croatia you need a certificate the Croatian ministry recognises, and its May 2026 table accepts any ICC marked valid for "Coastal waters", RYA Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster certificates, the ASA Bareboat Chartering certificate and the NauticEd SLC, each within set limits on boat size and distance from the coast. More: licence rules for Croatia. No licence? A skipper costs extra: bareboat vs skippered.

What we could not verify

  • Whether a boat's guests need both the Mljet vessel ticket and the per-person ticket (neither price list says).
  • Whether Okuklje and Sobra are inside Mljet National Park.
  • Lastovo Islands Nature Park fees.
  • Quay or buoy fees at Okuklje, Polače, Zaklopatica, Sobra and Šipanska Luka.

How we calculate

Distances: great-circle distance between the OpenStreetMap coordinates of each stop on a sphere of radius 6,371 km, converted at 1.852 km per nautical mile (our calculation). A real passage is longer: headlands, channels, tacking. Best months: the best-time rules (methodology). Catamaran berth examples: the marina's printed rate × its printed multihull surcharge (our arithmetic).

How to read the labels

  • [Secondary source]: From a newspaper, NGO, guide, charter company or community map; not official.
  • [Not verified]: We could not confirm it. We leave it open rather than guess, and never add it to a total.
  • No label: Read in an official text: government, park or port authority, or an operator's own published price list.

Distances, catamaran berth examples, best months and weather means are our calculation and say so. Fees change and depend on the boat's length, the day and where you stop: check with your charter base.
