How we build the routes

  • Classic routes are our editorial routes: the stops published on each destination page, in order. They are not navigation plans.
  • Second routes (Dubrovnik, Cyclades) are adapted from named secondary itineraries (The Globe Sailor, Yachtico) with our changes listed on each page.
  • Distances are great-circle (straight-line) distances between OpenStreetMap coordinates, in nautical miles: our calculation. Great-circle distance between OpenStreetMap (Nominatim) coordinates, Earth radius 6,371.0088 km, 1 nm = 1.852 km. Straight lines: the sailed distance is longer.
  • Best months apply the best-time rules to each route's reference point (NASA POWER, our calculation).
  • Family and beginner scores use each classic route's average leg (our calculation): families, beginners.
  • Fees are examples and are never added together.

How to read the labels

  • [Secondary source]: From a newspaper, NGO, guide, charter company or community map; not official.
  • [Not verified]: We could not confirm it. We leave it open rather than guess, and never add it to a total.
  • No label: Read in an official text: government, park or port authority, or an operator's own published price list.

Distances, catamaran berth examples, best months and weather means are our calculation and say so. Fees change and depend on the boat's length, the day and where you stop: check with your charter base.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best 7-day sailing itinerary for beginners?

We do not rank routes for skill. The shortest weeks by our straight-line calculation are Bahamas: the Abacos (about 50 nm), Balearic Islands: Ibiza and Formentera (about 58 nm), Greece: the Ionian from Lefkada (about 61 nm). Our editorial note on the Ionian route is that it has short, sheltered legs; a sailor has not reviewed it. Ask your charter base what suits your crew. Destinations scored for a first charter: beginner yacht charter.

From Split: 128 nm over 6 legs, longest leg 37.4 nm, best months September. From Dubrovnik: 120 nm over 7 legs, longest leg 24.3 nm, best months September. These are our calculations from straight-line distances and NASA POWER data.

Ionian or Cyclades for a week's sailing?

The Ionian from Lefkada: 61 nm over 6 legs, longest leg 23.0 nm, best months September and October. The Cyclades from Lavrio: 145 nm over 7 legs, longest leg 42.8 nm, best months September and October. These are our calculations from straight-line distances and NASA POWER data.
